Lyrics of the Day – March 27, 2008

March 27, 2008

Heard this at Subway today. A sweet song … and surprising easy to play. “Bad Medicine” by Bon Jovi. They’re ain’t no doctor that can cure my disease …

“I ain’t got a fever got a permanent disease
It’ll take more than a doctor to prescribe a remedy
I got lots of money but it isn’t what I need
Gonna take more than a shot to get this poison out of me
I got all the symptoms count ‘em 1,2,3

First you need
That’s what you get for falling in love
Then you bleed
You get a little but it’s never enough
On your knees
That’s what you get for falling in love
And now this boy’s addicted cause your kiss is the drug

Your love is like bad madicine
Bad medicine is what I need
Shake it up, just like bad madicine
There ain’t no doctor that can
Cure my disease”

Countdown Tor Rock

Here is a screen grab from the upcoming OAF video.  Just thought we would give you a little teaser.  As for the “Night of Rock”, I agree with all of Doug’s comments below.  It was a whole lot of fun and thanks to all those that came out to support OAF!!

The Day After

March 26, 2008

Less than 24 hours ago, OAF took the stage at Dick O’Dows, playing a four-song set that includes “Margaritaville,” “Let It Be,” “Sweet Child of Mine,” and our original “Countdown to Rock.”

People came from miles away. Old high school friends came back to see their brave musicians in action. Yes, it was a magical night.

On a personal note, thank you to everybody who came! I hope you had fun.

Let’s break it down:

The highlights:

1. Before the show, I wanted to get a shirt that had a band on it, so I went to the Salvation Army. Unfortunately, the only shirt they had the renowned country singer Collin Faye from his tour “Counting Sheep.” Wait, did I say “unfortunately”? Because it was perfect for the night.

2. My guitar didn’t have the microphone plug-in, so the nice guy who ran the open mic let me use his. Very cool.

3. “Margaritaville.” Definitely a highlight.

4. The rabid fan base we had.

5. Me wearing sunglasses at night. I thought they looked cool.

6. The post-concert interview in front of the fireplace with the guy who ran the open mic.

7. The chants of “OAF! OAF! OAF!”

8. The guy who played the bongos in the group before us. He was cool.

9. Michael Kontry, who filmed the entire thing. Look for videos sometime this week! He’s a professional. They’re going to be sweet.

10. The fact that we got to watch the Pistons win in overtime. It was sweet.

The ONLY lowlight:

1. This one is really my fault. The sunglasses prevented me from winking at the girls at the audience and I messed up a few times because I couldn’t see. Oh, who the hell cares. Totally worth it.

So will we do it again? Of course!!!! Plans are already in the works for “Countdown to Rock 2: Electric Boogaloo.” I’ll be so much better, so it’ll be really cool.

Look for videos sometimes this week. Thanks again!

Three Hours Away

March 24, 2008

Well, it all comes down to this. In a few hours, we take the stage for our first real performance. Ignore the fact that it’s an open mic, and a band made up of a jug player, a kazoo player and a guy playing two spoons off his knee would get a chance to play.

What can you expect? An emotional roller coaster. Some decent musicianship. A crowd that includes Ma and Pa Wernert and Weber Shandwick coworkers. And most of all … some good old-fashioned fun. Because if it’s not fun, I wouldn’t be playing.

Now … where’s my jug?

Tonight’s the Night!!!

March 24, 2008

This is it!!  In a matter of hours, OAF will take the open mic stage at Dick O Dows.  We have our songs ready to go (although I may have a few cheat sheets for the lyrics).  The open mic usually kicks off around 10 p.m but Doug and I plan on getting there a little early.   Right now the Countdown to Rock clock is clicking down at 11 hrs 10 minutes.  Hope to see everyone there!!

Panic! At the House in Royal Oak

March 18, 2008

So I’m sitting here eating dinner and it’s really starting to hit me that in less than a week, we’ll be playing in front of friends, family and (gulp) co-workers. It’s like taking that test you haven’t studied for.

Now if I had it my way, we would be playing the following songs: “Margaritaville,” “Sweet Caroline,” “Friends in Low Places,” “Brown-Eyed Girl” and “American Pie.” I will say for certain that two of those five songs just might get played on Monday.

And that whole “Doug singing songs” thing … don’t even get me started.

I’m probably getting all riled up over nothing. We’re going to be great … right?

One Week To Go!!!

March 17, 2008

The “Countdown to Rock” is closing in fast.  Pretty soon there will be no “Countdown” and it will just be time to “Rock”.  We are a week away from the big gig.  Doug and I practiced Friday night and we are pretty close.  Randy Jackson would probably say I am a little “pitchy” on Sweet Child of Mine.  That’s alright we are forging ahead and will be ready to take the small stage at Dick O’ Dows one week from now.  See you there!!

Lyrics of the Day – March 14, 2008

March 14, 2008

I almost forgot that today is Pi Day. Fortunately, I was reminded of this fact through my friend Kristen’s Facebook profile. So in honor, of that, only one song could work for today: You + Me = Us by 2Gether. Sing it!

“I know my calculus
It says U + Me = Us
Said I know my calculus
It says U + Me = Us

(Calculus)

You!
Plus sign!
Me!
Equal sign!
Us!

You!
Plus sign!
Me!
Equal sign!
Us!

(Ooh….)
Girl, no subject comes close to you
(Ooh…)
2Gether, sing it!

I…
Know my…
Cal-cu-luuuuuus!

I know my calculus
It says U + Me = Us
Said I know my calculus
It says U + Me = Us

Calculus!”

Lyrics of the Day – March 11, 2008

March 12, 2008

I have no idea why I picked these. Just thought they’re interesting. It’s by The Contours and it’s one song that is so incredibly easy to play. You might just hear it at the concert:

“You broke my heart
‘Cause I couldn’t dance
You didn’t even want me around
And now I’m back, to let you know
I can really shake ‘em down

Do you love me? (I can really move)
Do you love me? (I’m in the groove)
Ah do you love? (Do you love me)
Now that I can dance (dance)

Watch me now, oh (work, work)
Ah, work it all baby (work, work)
Well, you’re drivin’ me crazy (work, work)
With a little bit of soul now (work)”

Lyrics of the Day – March 9, 2008

March 9, 2008

So I went into the office yesterday to do a few things and only felt these lyrics were appropriate. And it’s by Loverboy, too, which actually used to be an old nickname of mine back in the day.

“Everyone’s watching, to see what you will do
Everyone’s looking at you, oh
Everyone’s wondering, will you come out tonight
Everyone’s trying to get it right, get it right

Everybody’s working for the weekend
Everybody wants a little romance
Everybody’s goin’ off the deep end
Everybody needs a second chance, oh
You want a piece of my heart
You better start from start
You wanna be in the show
Come on baby lets go”
